Haiti Prime Minister Garry Conille revealed that he intends to set up a new government one week after being discharged from the hospital.

Conille, who is holding the position in an interim capacity, was rushed to the hospital on Saturday after suffering an asthma attack.

Speaking in a video on Sunday, the PM noted that he was feeling fine and was determined to restoring peace in the Caribbean country so that its citizens can access health services.

“The whole time I was at the hospital, I was thinking of something: People who need to go to the general hospital can’t get there (due to widespread violence). People who need health care can’t afford it,” he stated.

“I hope that by early next week, we can have a government in place. I am doing everything we can so we can get out of this crisis.”

Meanwhile, reports indicated that three police officers were killed on Sunday as gang violence continues to afflict the country, especially its capital, Port-au-Prince.

Synopha, a police union in Haiti, further noted that one police officer is still missing while over 60 per cent of hospitals were shut down due to the violence.

Hours earlier, President William Ruto confirmed that deployment of Kenyan troops to Haiti would take place in the next two weeks.

“We have a very blessed nation that is being depended on by foreign nations as well, People from Sudan, and DRC are waiting on Kenya to assist them.

“For those in Haiti maybe this coming week or next week we will deploy our Police to maintain peace,” Ruto stated.

After Conille’s hospitalisation, a statement from the PM’s office revealed that the illness came after a week of intense activity.

He was reportedly treated at a hospital in the suburban neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince.

“Following a week of intense activities, the Prime Minister … had a slight illness on the afternoon of Saturday, June 8, 2024, and went to the hospital for treatment,” the statement read in part.

The 58-year-old was sworn into the role replacing Ariel Henry on Monday, June 3, after he was installed in the position by Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council on Wednesday last week.
