Junior Starlets on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup after win against Burundi

The national women’s Under 17 soccer team,Junior Starlets, beat Burundi 3-0 during their fourth round, first leg 2024 Under 17 women’s World Cup qualifier in Addis,Ababa Ethiopia.

Kenya is now 90 minutes away from a historic appearance at the world Cup. The return fixture is scheduled Sunday June 16 at the Ulinzi Complex.

At Abebe Bikila Stadium, Kenya piled pressure from the first whistle and it did not take long before the deadlock was broken after Lorna Faith found the back of the net in 11th minute.

Marion Serenge scored a second to hand Kenya 2-0 half time lead.

Susan Akoth sealed the emphatic win with 15 minutes to play to put the game beyond Burundi’s reach.

Starlets await the second leg with bated breath,seeking to finish the job and become the first soccer team to from Kenya to qualify for World Cup.

‘’We created a lot of chances offensively and we had even more that we should have scored going back to the second leg I think we have a lot to improve in terms of offensive actions.Playing at home I woyulfd urge every fan to please come and support the starlets because we are 90 minutes away from making history’’,remarked head coach Mildred Cheche.

The 2024 Women’s Under 17 World Cup is scheduled 16th October-3rd November in Dominican Republic and will be contested by a total of 16 teams.

Africa will be represented by three countries.

In some of the fourth round results Nigeria beat hosts Liberia 4-1 while Zambia also beat Morocco away 3-1.Second leg matches are scheduled 9th June 2024.
