A Kenyan company, Gabeire A Group (GAG), has been awarded a prestigious multibillion-dollar project for the construction of a 250km road from Antananarivo to Toamasina in Madagascar.

Speaking at the launch ceremony to commemorate the beginning of the construction project, Investments, Trade, and Industry Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano, said the achievement underscores Kenya’s expertise and capacity in the realm of infrastructure development and investment.

“Kenya’s labor force stands as the cornerstone of our nation, recognised globally for its excellence. It is a source of immense pride and serves as the bedrock of our economy,” said Miano.

This groundbreaking project, valued at US1 billion and funded by the World Bank, marks a significant step towards enhancing connectivity and progress in Madagascar.

As the first toll highway in the country, it will drastically reduce the distance between Antananarivo and Toamasina by 110 km, cutting travel time from nine hours to a mere three.

The project holds immense promise for Kenya, serving as a catalyst for trade by exporting Kenyan expertise in construction and technology consultancy, as well as attracting investment.

Additionally, it is expected to create employment opportunities for both countries, further driving economic growth in Africa.

“In light of this achievement and others, the Kenya Kwanza Government is resolute in its commitment to champion local enterprises like GAG within Kenya, across Africa, and beyond by creating a conducive business environment,” stated CS Miano.

Miano noted that the project not only signifies a major milestone in African infrastructure development but also reflects the capabilities and commitment of Kenyan companies to contribute to the continent’s growth and prosperity.
