The assessment of persons with disabilities in Kiambu County has commenced at Kiambu Town Community Hall and will conclude in the next two weeks.

This exercise is being conducted jointly by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and the Kiambu County Government and aims to register all people living with disabilities in the county and they will receive a certificate and be incorporated into the National Council for Persons with Disabilities’ Management Information System to benefit from their services.

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) offers a wide range of programs to support individuals with disabilities and other programs include education assistance through scholarships and specialized support for people with albinism, such as cancer screenings, provision of lotions and lip balms, and educational aid.

The council also provides a monthly cash transfer of Sh2, 000 to those with severe disabilities who are enrolled in the program.

“This exercise is important because it will bring together people with various disabilities where they will be registered and be able to access services from NCPWDs,” said David Gichuhi, the Director of Gender and Social Services in Kiambu County.

Josphat Sasaba Mokoit, the Kiambu County Director of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities said that the numerous programs that they have been running and supporting persons with disabilities, ensure inclusivity for all individuals.

Additionally, NCPWD offers grants for economic empowerment, aimed at both individuals with disabilities and caregiver groups where they supply tools of trade, facilitate disability mainstreaming initiatives, and provide LPO financing.

“Persons with disabilities can benefit from tax exemptions, legal services, business levy waivers, and the provision of assistive devices and as a council we have been assisting with job placement through career portal, FUZU” Mokoit said.

These comprehensive programs aim to enhance the quality of life and opportunities for persons with disabilities across the country.

The initiative will cover all 12 sub-counties, during the month with activities held in one ward per sub-county. Further assessments will be at the Thika Community Hall in Hospital Ward. The event will proceed to MCA Office Kagwe DE sparrow in Nyanduma Ward, followed by Gatongora Vocational Training Centre in Gatongora Ward, and then to Makutano Market in Ndeiya Ward.

Subsequently, it will move to Mangu Social Hall in Mangu Ward, Lower Kabete Chief’s Camp in Kabete Ward, Ikinu Women’s Hall in Ikinu Ward, and Kiganjo Catholic Hall in Kiganjo Ward.

The assessment will continue at Juja Sub-County Offices in Juja Ward, Boxing Hall in Ndenderu Ward, and conclude at P.C.E.A Musa Gitau Hall-Gikambura in Karai Ward on the 27th of June.
