The President further said funds for the reconstruction of damaged schools will be made available through the NG-CDF.

Schools were to open on April 29, 2024, but the dates were pushed twice due to the ongoing heavy rains and devastating flooding in most parts of the country.

Field education officers working in areas where schools are hosting displaced persons have been working closely with local administrators to identify alternative accommodations for the affected persons.

At the same time, May 10 will be a public holiday in memory of those who have died in floods. Kenyans will be expected to plant trees to mitigate climate change.

“We shall be having a National Tree Growing Day on Friday 10th May 2024. A gazette notice shall be issued to this effect. Hon Soipan Tuya, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Forestry & Climate Change shall hold a press conference today to give further directions” said government spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura.

As of Tuesday, the floods had claimed 238 people, 75 others reported missing, with 47,000 households already displaced nationwide.

Nairobi leads among counties with the most casualties with over 164,000 people reportedly affected.

Kenya Meteorological Department has said the rain intensities across the country will likely reduce during the second half of the week.
